Pool Closing

Water lowered, leaves cleared, lines drained and the cover on, so the pool winters properly.

Water down below the jets

The first move is lowering the water below the jets. Water left sitting in the fittings and return lines is what freezes, expands and cracks things over an Ontario winter, so the level has to come down before anything else is touched.

From there the crew works from the top of the pool down, so the rest of the job happens on a pool that is already safe from the first hard frost.

Leaves out, and the 30 minute line

Leaves are scooped before the cover goes on. A cover laid over a pool full of leaves traps them against the water all winter, and you open the pool in spring to a stained floor and a long clean-up.

Scooping is part of every closing. If there are more than 30 minutes of leaves to clear, an additional charge applies, so it pays to get the worst of the yard out of the water before the crew arrives.

Fittings, ladder, diving board and accessories

The fittings come out, along with the ladder, the diving board and the accessories. Everything that can be damaged by frost or sun is taken out of the pool and stored for winter instead of being left to weather outside.

Putting it all in one place also helps in spring. The same ladder, board and accessories are the first things the opening crew looks for, so a tidy closing makes the next opening quicker.

Lines drained, equipment winterized, cover on

The lines are drained and the equipment is winterized, which is the step that keeps the pump, filter and heater from taking frost damage in the cold months. Then the cover goes on, with water bags added if the cover needs them to stay down.

Ace closes pools across the GTA. An opening and closing package saves $50, and a standard opening is $429, so booking both in one call to 647-998-7665 settles next spring along with this fall.

Closing questions are easiest answered across the counter at the Ace store, 6400 Main St, Whitchurch-Stouffville.
