When a Vinyl Pool Liner Needs Replacing, and How the Job Runs
Liners wear out slowly and then all at once. Here's what to watch for and what happens when you decide to replace it.

A vinyl liner is the skin of your pool. It holds the water in, it sets the colour and pattern you see every time you look out the back window, and it takes a beating from sun, chemicals and ground movement for years. Eventually every liner reaches the point where it's cheaper and wiser to replace it than to keep patching it. Here's how to tell when you're there, and how a replacement runs with Ace Pools.
Signs your liner is nearing the end
Liners rarely fail overnight. They show their age first. Look for these when you open the pool in spring:
- Fading, especially along the waterline and on the steps, where sun and chemicals hit hardest.
- Wrinkles or stretching that weren't there before, which can mean the liner has loosened from the wall.
- A brittle or stiff feel, where the vinyl has lost its flexibility and cracks under light pressure.
- Repeated small leaks, or a patch that's been patched again.
- Seams that look worn, or a pattern that's visibly washed out compared with a hidden section, such as under a ladder bracket.
None of these on their own settles it. A faded liner can last a few more seasons. A liner with a leak you keep chasing is telling you something different. If you're unsure which you have, the honest answer is to have someone look at it in person, and our repairs page is where to start.
Why waiting can cost more
A leaking liner doesn't only lose water. Water getting behind the liner can soften the base underneath it, and a bad base is harder and more expensive to fix than a bad liner. Chasing a small leak for a couple of seasons and then replacing the liner anyway means you've paid for both. If you see early signs, it's worth getting an opinion before the pool is closed for winter, not after.
What we offer: 30 mil liners and samples to choose from
Ace Pools installs 30 mil liners. The mil number is the thickness of the vinyl, and 30 mil is a heavy-duty option. You aren't picking from a catalogue photo, either. We show you samples so you can see the patterns and colours in person. That matters because a liner looks different in daylight, under water and at dusk than it does in a brochure. Take the sample outside and look at it near your own deck and fence.
How the replacement runs
The process has a few stages, and the one that surprises people is that the liner doesn't exist yet when we visit.
- Measure. We measure your pool so the liner is made to fit it. Every pool is a little different, so a liner is built to your measurements, not pulled off a shelf.
- Manufacture. After we measure, it takes about one week for the liner to be made.
- Install. Once it's ready, we install it.
- Start-up. Start-up follows two to three days after the install.
So from measuring to a finished, running pool, you're looking at a couple of weeks of calendar time, give or take scheduling and weather. That's a rough picture, not a promise. If the pool is open and you want it ready for a specific date, tell us up front and we'll plan backward from it.
A liner is a good time to look at everything else
Because the pool is empty when the liner is replaced, it's the easiest moment to deal with the other worn parts. Our renovation work includes natural stone coping, water features and diving rocks, new lights including coloured LEDs, interlock stone and landscaping around the pool, fresh concrete work, and replacing old pool lines. You don't have to do any of that with a liner job. But if the coping is crumbling or the lights are failing, it's worth asking while the access is open.
Equipment is part of the same conversation
A new liner on tired equipment is a mismatch. We also supply and fully install replacement heaters, water pumps, salt systems and filters, and we repair leaks. If your pump has been loud, or your heater has been unreliable, mention it when we measure.
What to do next
If you've spotted fading, wrinkles or a leak you can't track down, don't wait for the water to tell you more. Have a look at the repairs page to see what's covered, then reach out through the contact page and tell us what you've seen. We'll tell you plainly whether it's a liner job, a repair, or something that can wait another season.
The best time to measure for a new liner is usually well before you want to swim. That gives the one-week manufacturing window room to breathe, and it keeps the install from landing on the first hot weekend of the year.
